Our data collection process is rigorous and relies on multiple sources to ensure the most accurate and up-to-date information:

  1. 10-K Reports

    • For publicly traded companies, we primarily rely on annual 10-K reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

    • These reports provide detailed financial information, including total U.S. store counts, revenue figures, average check sizes, and other data points (i.e., numbers essential for imputing certain metrics, such as the average sales per location, which is necessary for calculating revenue, and more).

    • We carefully analyze these reports to extract relevant data for our calculations and metrics.

  2. Company Websites and Press Releases

    • We regularly monitor official company websites and press releases for updates on store counts, expansion plans, and other relevant information.

    • This is particularly useful for tracking changes between annual report filings.

  3. Industry Reports and Databases

    • We utilize reputable industry databases and reports to cross-reference and supplement our data.

    • These sources can provide valuable insights, especially for private companies that don't file public financial reports.

  4. Direct Company Contact

    • When necessary, we reach out directly to companies for clarification or additional information.

    • This helps ensure we have the most accurate and current data possible.

  5. Consumer Reports

    • Our food poisoning reports come directly from consumers through our platform .

    • The website only shows a fraction of total reports (based on consumer choice) whereas our benchmarking process includes all reports, giving the full picture.

    • We have a robust moderation process in place to ensure highest possible quality data. To learn more about our moderation and data quality process click .
